The National Basketball Association will play exhibition and possibly even some regular season games in Brazil within the next six years as the league seeks to build its presence outside the United States.

Chinese NBA star Yao sends condolence to earthquake victims

Chinese NBA star Yao Ming on Wednesday expressed condolences to the families of victims in the earthquake in China's Qinghai province and offered help.

"I send my sincere condolences to the families of the relatives in Qinghai area and keep a close communication without any financial concern," Yao said at a press conference at Toyota Center in Houston.

A series of strong earthquakes hit a mountainous and impoverished area of China's Qinghai province early Wednesday, killing 589 people and injuring over ten thousand.

The Yao Ming Foundation and U.S. company iTalkBB quickly responded to this disaster by providing a free hotline for the overseas Chinese to contact their friends and relatives in Qinghai.

"My foundation is determining how we can best help. We are pleased to be able to collaborate with iTalkBB on this free hotline to help relatives of the victims," said Yao.

The Yao Ming Foundation has accumulated some experience from its aid to the earthquake-stricken areas in Sichuan province, and such kind of experience will help the foundation do a better job this time, Yao said.

The Yao Ming Foundation, established in 2008, has donated around 2 million dollars to Sichuan, which was hit by a magnitude-8.0 tremor on May 12, 2008. Some 80,000 people died and more than 8,000 school rooms were destroyed in the disaster.

World Cup trophy exhibitation tour to arrive at Seoul

The World Cup trophy will be displayed in Seoul next week ahead of the upcoming finals in South Africa in June, announced the South Korea Football Association (KFA) on Thursday.

The coveted trophy will be unveiled at a ceremony next Tuesday and exhibited to the public in Seoul, one of the 86 cities participating in the global trophy tour, which started at FIFA's headquarters in Zurich on Sept. 21 last year.

KFA president Cho Chung-yun, former KFA chief Chung Mong-joon and the South Korean team's head coach Huh Jung-moo will attend the display ceremony, according to the KFA.

Ceremony Held to Honor the Divine Farmer

More than 10,000 Chinese held a ceremony in central China's Hubei Province Wednesday morning to worship the Yan Emperor, an ancestor who was believed to initiate agriculture some 5,000 years ago.

The ceremony was held at a park in Lishan, the Emperor's birth place which is now a suburb of Suizhou city.

Li Hongzhong, governor of Hubei, delivered a speech before songs and dances were performed.

Yok Mu-ming, chairman of the New Party in Taiwan, attended the ceremony along with others from Hong Kong and Macao.

"My major in college was medicine, so Yan Emperor is really my master in this respect," Yok said.

Also known as Shennong, or the Divine Farmer, Yan Emperor was thought to be founding father of traditional Chinese medicine. He supposedly tasted hundreds of herbs to learn their medical values.

May 20 is the fourth of April according to the Chinese Lunar calendar. That is the day believed to be the birthday of Yan Emperor.
